Course Description
This course examines the language and techniques of watercolor painting from portrait, still life and landscape. Students will paint using various strategies derived from current and historical practice.
As a medium that allows only a few corrections, the basis of watercolor must be understood. Students will learn the medium's behavior on wet and dry paper and how to cause accidents without losing control, allowing the medium to express itself and create live images. This "spontaneous" method of applying watercolor paint is what gives life to the paintings of masters like John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and Anders Zorn, to list a few.
Classes will be divided in:
One day working from still life: How to set a composition, shapes, light and simplification.
Two days studying Landscape from photos: Learning through step-by-step demonstrations: how to draw, tonal values, control brushwork, and composition.
Three days around the portraits and nude, flesh tones. (From photos and self-portraits)
The goal is to win the confidence and obtain definitive results in this unforgiven technique.
All levels of experience are welcome.
