Workshop Description
In this 3-week workshop I will share with you my approach to landscape painting using oils. We will explore my use of colour and techniques to create paintings that have atmosphere and interest. I will demonstrate my process of painting from preparing the surface to deciding if it is finished, providing practical and technical advice along the way.
During each weekly session there will be a mixture of presentations, demonstrations and painting exercises with plenty of opportunities for questions and feedback.
Workshop Outline
Week 1 -Surface and Composition
Presentation - about me, my background and my style - my inspirations and influences.
Discussion - starting a painting - selecting a photo reference and thinking about composition.
Demonstration/Exercise - composition and tone activity.
Demonstration/Exercise - layering colours.
Main Demonstration - A SIMPLE LANDSCAPE.
Assignment.
Week 2 - Colour and Paint
Q&A
Presentation - about my use of colour in landscape painting - landscape artists that inspire me.
Demonstration/Exercise - colour mixing activity.
Demonstration/Exercise - using unexpected colour.
Main Demonstration - A SEASCAPE.
Assignment.
Week 3 - Style and Techniques
Q&A
Presentation - about my tools, my colour palette, my style.
Demonstration/Exercise - brush marks activity.
Demonstration/Exercise - creating atmosphere.

Lemon Yellow
Cadmium Yellow

These are the colours that I will be using during the sessions. I use a variety of brands, including Winsor & Newton (Winton range), Daler Rowney (Georgian range), Michael Harding
Oil Painting Mediums
Refined Linseed Oil - in small container
Thinners to thin paint - in small container - I use Sansador (Winsor and Newton)
Solvent to clean brushes - in larger container/jar - I use Zest-It Oil Paint Dilutant
Brushes
A selection of good quality brushes suitable for oil painting - I mainly use flat, synthetic brushes in a range of different sizes (such as 5mm, 8mm, 12mm)
My preferred brushes are Rosemary and Co (Evergreen or Ivory range) and Daler Rowney (System 3 range)
Painting Surface
Primed boards or canvas - suitable for oil painting - in a variety of sizes
Oil painting paper - at least A4 size
(Note: the dimensions of my demonstration paintings will be provided before each session)
Palette
Some form of palette for use with oil paint - either wooden or disposable pad (ideally bigger than A4 - 8.27 inches by 11.69 inches)
Miscellaneous
Paper towels and/or rags to clean up/wipe brushes
