Workshop Description
Do you ever feel unsure or stuck when starting an abstract drawing or painting? Or perhaps you get a bit lost somewhere in the messy middle?
Then this one-day workshop is for you! I will demonstrate techniques to jumpstart your abstract paintings with confidence and help unlock your spontaneity & creativity. I will share tips and tools using a variety of water-based media to inspire your painterly abstract art practice. There’s something here for you, whether you’re just starting out, or want to deepen and sustain your expression of abstract art.
Outline:
Focus on mark making using mixed media
Combining paint & drawing materials
Creating compositional structure
Collecting shapes and lines from observation
Workshop Materials
All water based or water-soluble media. If you need to modify some of these materials because you cannot find the specific brands, it’s okay to do so!
Paint
Use whatever you have on hand. You don’t need to buy all this. Try to have a white, Payne’s Gray or Black, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, blue, plus 2-3 other colors of your choice.
Watercolor inks or paint
Acrylic paint
Gouache or acrylic gouache
Flashe vinyl paint
Brushes
A variety of inexpensive brushes. I often use just 2-3 brushes, so you don’t need many. We’re going to be hard on them, so make sure you’re okay if they get wrecked!
Economy white or natural bristle (chip brushes) size 1-inch to 2-inch
Economy round bristle brushes size 6 or 8, 10 or 12
Drawing Tools
Water-soluble artist crayons like Caran d’Ache Neocolor II Artist Crayons or Marabu Art Crayons. Try to have a few neutrals (white, light to dark grays) and some muted primary colors (Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Payne’s Gray or Blue) plus 2-3 other colors of your choice.
Stabilo Woody 3 in 1 Pencil in Black (1)
Lyra Graphite Crayon, water-soluble in 6B or 9B and the sharpener, or other water-soluble graphite pencil (1)
