Course Description
In this course we will explore creating mixed media land and seascapes using Oil Pastel, Gouache and mixed media. With a focus on mark making and spontaneity, this is an in depth exploration into loosening up and finding freedom in combining media. Great for sketchbook work and development but equally useful for creating larger works.
Richard shares his experience of working with mixed media and helps to open up the possibilities and how we can use them to complement our own visual language and style.

Combining media
Atmosphere building
Working on various surfaces
Colour mixing
Spontaneity and being loose.
Course Outline
Week 1 -
Richard will present his own work and ideas and philosophy behind his practice.
A painting demonstration by Richard in which he shows the fundamentals of his approach to using mixed media
Homework set.
Week 2 -
Feedback on student work.
A focus on spontaneity and mark making
A demonstration by Richard + Painting time.
Homework set.
Week 3 -
Feedback on student work.
A further exploration of mark making and pushing media further.
A demonstration by Richard.
Richard will share techniques for layering and creating textures, through scumbling and mark making.
Painting time.
Homework set.
Week 4 -
Feedback on student work.
Colour mixing and intuition, setting one’s self free from constraints
Painting time.
Homework set.
Week 5 -
Feedback on student work and a discussion around the mediums and techniques explored. Using the techniques learned, we will create a paintings during an extended painting time after a demonstration by Richard.
Course Materials
Oil Pastel: Sennelier brand is the best
Richard will be using the following colours
Olive Green.
Burnt Sienna
Raw Sienna or Yellow Ochre.
Titanium White.
Light Grey
Medium Grey
Charcoal
Sepia
(Feel free to use which ever colours you like)
Gouache
Richard will be using the following colours
Ultramarine Blue
Cadmium yellow
Primary Red (Or Crimson)
Burnt Sienna
Raw Sienna
Permenant White
Watercolour (Optional as Gouache can be used like watercolour)
Charcoal sticks
Surface
Richard will be using Khadi Paper, watercolour paper (Any type) and Masonite panel. Though you can use any surface you choose (Not canvas)
Brushes.
A mix of Bristle and Synthetic bristle brushes in a variety of shapes and sizes. A great synthetic bristle brush brand are Bristlene by Pro Arte, Ideal Sizes and shapesRound 12/6/4 Flat 10/6
Also a sponge brush

Palette Knife, RGM 31, 6 or 30
