Course Description

Join art writer John Seed, the author of “Disrupted Realism” for four sessions introducing the history and fundamentals of Art Criticism. Seed will offer students a critical framework based on Feldman’s Model of Art Criticism and emphasize the potential for art criticism as a form of exploration balanced by judgement. He will also discuss forms of criticism and contemporary issues in art criticism. Students will join Zoom breakout room sessions to discuss key topics.

Each 2 hour session will include presentations by the instructor followed by group discussions. There will also be a 10 minute break. Expect a fun, lively course that will increase your confidence in your ability to offer and receive criticism. Optional assignments and readings will be provided for enrichment.

Participants:

This course is intended for all visual artists, especially those in early and mid-career. Fluency in English and college level writing skills are expected. 

Objectives:

Upon completing this course all participants will be able to:

Confidently be able to criticize and discuss their own work as well as the art of others.

Practice criticism as a form of self-education.

Understand key methods and principles of art criticism.

Practice criticism in an ethical and objective framework.

Week One: A brief history of art criticism and Feldman’s method.

Week Two: Modernity and criticism.

Week Three: Visual description and the elements of art.

Week Four: Forms of art criticism

Week Five: Artist statements and the situation of contemporary are criticism.
