Course Description

This course offers an in-depth exploration of still life painting using oil paints and charcoal. Students will focus on capturing the nuances of light, texture, and form through careful observation. With an emphasis on tonal balance and color harmony, students will learn how to compose compelling still life arrangements and bring them to life with oil paints.

The course includes demonstrations, critiques, and ample studio time, allowing students to experiment and refine their techniques. By the end of the course, participants will have completed several original pieces and will showcase their work in a final critique and presentation.

Course Outline

Session 1: Introduction to Still Life

Overview of the history of still life painting across different art movements.

Live demonstration by the instructor: setting up a still life and basic painting techniques.

Working Time: Students begin their first still life under guidance.

Homework: Complete the initial still life piece and reflect on composition and technique.

Session 2: Critique and Tonality

Critique: Group review of homework pieces, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement.

Presentation on Tonality and Drawing: Understanding tonal values and how they define form and depth.

Working Time: Apply lessons on tonality to a new still life setup.

Session 3: Critique and Transcription


Critique: Review of student progress.

Live demonstration: Transcription—copying a master still life painting to understand color, composition, and technique.

Working Time: Students begin their own transcription project under supervision.

Session 4: Color Harmony and Balance

Presentation on Color Harmony and Balance: How to create visual interest and unity in still life paintings.

Working Time: Students apply color harmony principles to a new composition, focusing on mood and contrast.

Session 5: Final Critique and Presentation

Slide presentation on notable still life works and what makes them successful.

Final Critique: Each student presents their completed piece for group feedback.

Course wrap-up and discussion on personal style development and future practice.
