Course Description
This hands-on class explores the methods and materials used in six great periods of Western Art.
Each class will present the visual history and methods of each topic with a goal of better understanding how the art was made and its use in one’s personal art practice, a video demo of the topic, Q&A and many visual samples and an assigned and fully explained art project.
Students will do an art project each week that explores the topic. These will be posted on Padlet and critiques by the instructor.
Open to all media and levels of experience and interest.
Course Outline
Week 1 -
Introduction, the evolution of Visual Art in Europe and America, the materials and philosophies of art making.
First subject: Medieval art and Illumination.
Week 2 -
Baroque Painting, form and tonality.
Week 3 -
Academic training and painting in 19 th century France and the academies of art.
Week 4 -
Color and Light in Impressionist painting and approaches.
Week 5 -
Fauvist color and expression.
Week 6 -
Understanding and creating Abstraction

Basic classic palette for oil, acrylic or watercolor and pastel.

Surfaces:
Gessoed painting surfaces, 8X10-11X14, watercolor and pastel pads of choice.
Basic color surfaces are white, gray, tan. These can be opaque or transparent imprimaturas.
Containers for oil and thinners or water (Preferably metal or heavy plastic. Not glass because they break)
Palette for mixing colors (Disposable, wood, metal, etc.)
Linseed oil for oil paints
Brushes for oil, watercolor or acrylic. (3-4 well shaped and flexible bristle brushes)
Paper towels
View finder for compositional choices
Sketchbook for thumbnail sketches.
Pastel or watercolor paper if needed
