Workshop Description
Join me for a workshop focused on the essential principles of composition and design, key elements for creating impactful paintings. Drawing from my 30 years of experience as a painter, I will share effective strategies to simplify the design process and enhance your artistic practice. Whether you’re looking to strengthen your foundational skills or refine your approach, this workshop will guide you in developing a more intuitive and effective way to compose your artwork.
Workshop Outline
Week 1
Overview of materials for design creation.
Sharing my background and how I transformed a once-weak area in my painting into a strength.
Demonstration: Pen and ink sketching techniques.
Demonstration: Creating a small painting.
Q&A
Week 2
Introduction to color studies and its application in design.
Exploration of different ways of using paint to sculpt shapes.
Hands-on practice: Color mixing and application exercises.
Group critique: Sharing and discussing each other’s work.
Demonstrations of color studies and designing with paint.
Q&A.
Week 3
Putting It All Together - In this week we’ll gather inspiration from nature or reference photos to create dynamic sketches. We’ll use these sketches as the foundation for developing a balanced and interesting compositions.
This process will prepare you for crafting a cohesive and expressive painting, with a strong understanding of composition, design and form.
Workshop Materials List
Either oil or acrylics are fine but if you are already working in acrylic, I would recommend acrylic because that’s what I’ll be working with.
I use a limited palette,
Cad yellow light,
Pyrole red lt.
Permanent Maroon
phthalo blue (red Shade)
(As a guide I would say 1 yellow, 1 warm and 1 cool red, 1 blue and titanium white.)
Small panels, nothing smaller than 6” x 6” and nothing larger than 11” x 14” or 12” x 12”.
Brushes,
Easel,
Palette knife,
Paper towels,
Mineral spirits for oil or water for water media If using acrylic, I recommend a wet box palette.
Sketch book, micron or ink pen and a brush pen if available.
