Course Description

This class will embrace the portability of watercolor to create work that is immediate and spontaneous. Focusing on wet-on-wet techniques and the element of chance they introduce into your work, students will work to make small watercolors of everyday objects found in and around our homes, transcriptions, and views from our windows.

Course Outline

Week 1

In this first session, we will create watercolors from a single object. Using varied palettes and approaches, we will explore different ways of seeing and interpreting a singular object.

Week 2

In this second week, we will learn to let go of the image. Keeping the paper very wet, and slowly building up form through multiple layers of watercolor, and lots of lifting out with a paper towel.

Week 3

This week, we will create work that we will go back into once its dried – to create a work with a variety of hard and soft edges.

Week 4

This week, we will learn about composition and form from the masters by creating a transcription of a master work in watercolor.

Week 5

Final watercolor and final critique of work
