Workshop Description
On this course I will show you my approach to landscape painting using oils. I will demonstrate how I start and finish a painting, providing practical advice about preparing to paint and deciding when to stop. We will discuss how to select and use photo references with a focus on composition decisions. Using a combination of demos and exercises, we will explore the use of colour and mark-making techniques to create interesting, atmospheric and light-filled paintings.
Workshop Outline
Week 1 - SURFACE/COMPOSITION
Introductions.
My inspirations and influences.
Starting a landscape painting.
Selecting a photo reference and thinking about composition.
Demo of how I prepare a surface and start the drawing stage.
How to make adjustments.
Composition and drawing exercises.
Week 2 - PAINT/COLOUR
Student Feedback.
Using colour in landscape painting.
Discussion of naturalism, impressionism and post-impressionism.
Demo of how to convey aerial perspective and atmosphere using colour and tone.
Colour mixing exercises and landscape studies from photo references.
Week 3 - TOOLS/TECHNIQUES
Student Feedback.
Exploring different ways to apply paint to make a painting more interesting.
Exercises in mark-making and brush handling techniques.
Demo of the final stages of a painting and deciding when it’s finished.

Oil Painting Mediums
Solvent to clean brushes - ie Low Odour White Spirit - in larger container, ie jar
Thinners to thin paint - ie Low Odour Turps or Zest-It Oil Paint Dilutant - in smaller container
Brushes
Selection of good quality brushes suitable for oil painting - to include a few flat, synthetic brushes in a range of different sizes (such as 5mm, 8mm, 12mm)
NB: I use Rosemary and Co (Evergreen or Ivory range) and Daler Rowney (System 3 range) brushes
Painting Surface
Board/Canvas/Paper - assorted size, suitable for oil painting
Additional Oil Painting Paper for value/colour/drawing exercises - assorted sizes
Palette
Some form of palette for use with oil paint - either wooden or disposable pad (ideally bigger than A$)
Miscellaneous
Paper towels and/or rags to clean up/wipe brushes
