Course Description
This class will focus on the movement of water and its relationship to the sky above through a variety of techniques. Glazing, scumbling, velaturas, wet into wet and the use of the pallet knife will be addressed through demonstrations. I will give out color recipes during each painting session.
Course Outline
Week 1
I will send out a photograph before class that we will work from. The class will be considered an active painting session for those who choose to participate. Others may choose to watch the recording and paint along that way.
Note: students my choose their own photos provided that they follow the theme of this class.
Week 2
We will begin class by reviewing work done the previous week and continue with the painting to bring it close to a finish.
Week 3
I will send out another photo before class. We will review work done the previous week and begin working on the new painting.
Week 4
We will review work done the previous week and continue working on the second painting to bring it close to a finish.
Week 5
We will review work done the previous week and put finishing touches on our 2 paintings. Students may also want to share previous work for group feedback.
Course Materials List
Oil or Acrylic
Colors
Yellow: Cadmium Yellow Light, India Yellow
Blue: Serves Blue, Ultramarine
Red: Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson
Green: Sap Green, Viridian
Earth: Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre
White: Titanium
Brushes: flat brushes in a variety of sizes; make sure you include a few soft, synthetic or sable, a few rounds or filbert and at least one 2" or larger soft, flat brush for glazing. Make sure these are not watercolor brushes.
Palette knife - flexible, cranked shaft at least 3in long.
Palette, wood or paper (toned gray paper is preferable)
Linseed oil
Turpenoid or odorless paint thinner - NOT TURPENOID NATURAL!
Containers for linseed oil and turpenoid
Stretched canvas or gessoed panel
Paper towels and painting rags
Bring an object/objects that you feel compelled to paint. The simpler the better! If using photos for source material, Students must provide their own photos.
