Course Description

During this course we will develop different versions of still life composition. There will be one photographic still life and different versions of the composition. One version will be based on a realistic image, the other versions we will transform, change the original tone and color. The portrait version will be created in a realistic manner. In class we will study the principles of composition and painting, color harmony and copying. During this 5-week course, students will complete a series of weekly exercises applying different ideas to still life. Students are encouraged to draw together and ask questions during class, or they can watch and draw in their free time during the week. In-depth analysis of student work will be provided via Padlet and through question and answer sessions during our classes. Practice: creating compositional sketches on a specific still life example using a graphics editor. Homework at the end of each lesson and analysis of students' work at the beginning of each lesson.

Week 1 -

Composition: Principles and schemes for creating a composition using the method of the artist Vuillard.

Compositional analysis of the artist's paintings.

Week 2 -

Creating a still life composition in different versions.

Week 3 -

Sketches in oil paints, color selection, color harmonies.

Week 4 -

Starting work on a painting.

Week 5 -

Continuing work, painting.

Course Materials List

In the first weeks, you will only need: Pencil and paper or any graphics program/application: Photoshop, Procreate, etc. If you do not have access to it or do not know how to use it, you can work on class assignments using a pencil and paper.

Weeks Three - Five: 9x12 canvas or panel and a selection of oil paints.

Suggested palette for oil paints:

Titanium White

Ultramarine Blue

Cobalt Blue (optional)

Cadmium Red Light

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Yellow

Earth colors you have:

Raw Sienna or Golden Ochre

Sepia or Raw Umber

Black (whatever you already have)

Quinacridone Violet (or any other violet)
