


Sculpting the Skull (Online Course) Fall 2025 w/ Marusia Nita

Course Description
The course is focused on studying the human skull, the underlying structure of the face and head as a portrait. We sculpt the life size skull in water based clay.
Course Outline
Week 1 - We build the profile
Week 2 - We add clay notes to establish the widths which in turn will connect with the center plane of the profile.
Week 3 - We focus on likeness and accuracy.
Week 4 - Continue focusing on accuracy as well as rendering.
Week 5 - Rendering of the surface and learning how to prepare the sculpture for terra-cotta.
Course Materials List
1 block of water based clay.
Drawing tool and modeling tools.
Calipers (measuring tool).
Portrait armature.
Sculpture stand.
Students have the option to order a scientific model (skull) from internet.
