Workshop Description
This workshop will cover the basics of creating paintings with oil paint and cold wax medium (CWM). Additionally, the instructor will demonstrate how collage and a variety of mark-making tools can be used to create complex and engaging surfaces. This workshop is ideal for painters wanting to explore cwm and painters who have tried cwm before and would like a refresher.
Workshop Outline
Week 1 -
Review FAQ re: cwm to cover basics such as substrates, drying times, tools and materials overview, etc. Show brief slide show of cwm work. Demonstrate how to make a collage that will serve as a substrate for cold wax paintings. Then, demonstrate how to prepare Arches Oil paper and how to apply the first layer of paint mixed with cwm. Show how to apply a second layer and press texture into it. Demo a quick alla prima painting using collage, and a few other techniques that work with wet paint. Demo an abstract and abstracted landscape if time allows.
Week 2 -
Quick review of week #1 and answer questions. Demonstrate techniques that work well on dry and semi-dry surfaces.
Examples:
Apply thin veil of color with brayer
Masks
Stencils
Mono-printing transfer techniques
Solvent reduction
Scraping
Dry pigments
WeeK 3 -
Critique (discuss and look at what is working well, not a scary critique!) work that has been submitted . Do a quick review of design principles and composition. Finish demo of techniques if needed and answer any questions. Demo how to make simple collage papers that work well with CWM.

Small bottle of clear gesso
Would Be a Luxury to Have
