Course Description
Bring Your Watercolours to Life!
Ready to add more vibrancy and expression to your watercolour paintings? Join me, Sally, from Sillier Than Sally Art Studio, for a fun, dynamic, and insightful deep dive into watercolours!
In this multi-week class, we’ll start with an exciting first week focused on mastering unique watercolour techniques and tips through demos, warm-up exercises, and my signature Watercolour Wonders Formulas. Along the way, we’ll chat about embracing artistic "mistakes" and turning them into powerful elements of our creative process.
As the weeks progress, we’ll bring bold, lively artworks to life—starting with bright florals, followed by an engaging owl, and finally, a dynamic female portrait. You’ll strengthen your drawing and layout skills, build confidence with watercolours, and discover the perfect balance between soft, dreamy washes and striking realism. Most importantly, you’ll learn when to take control and when to let watercolours work their own magic.
Let’s create, experiment, and bring more life to your art—one brushstroke at a time!
Course Outline
Week 1 – Watercolour 101 & the “Plop & Pull” Formula
We’re kicking things off with a deep dive into all things watercolour! You’ll learn foundational techniques, plus my unique “Plop & Pull” painting formula—designed to bring energy and life to your work. To put it all into practice, I’ll guide you step by step through a dragonfly painting, demonstrating my full process from start to finish.
Week 2 – Florals: Loosen Up & Add Detail
This week, we’ll create a vibrant watercolour painting of a potted floral arrangement. We’ll explore ways to loosen up your brushwork while also learning how to add pockets of detail for balance. As we build on the techniques from Week 1, you’ll start to feel more comfortable with my signature approach to painting.
Week 3 – Painting a Barn Owl
Time to put your skills to the test with a beautiful barn owl! I’ll walk you through the drawing and painting process, showing you how to apply everything we’ve learned so far to create soft feathers, expressive eyes, and a dynamic bird portrait.
Week 4 – Ethereal Underwater Portrait
For our final week, we’re bringing all our techniques together to paint a dreamy underwater portrait. From sketching and layering watercolours to adding the final dynamic pen-and-paint details, I’ll guide you through each step to create a striking and expressive portrait.
