Workshop Description
This workshop is focused on creating emotive portraits using the acrylic medium. Participants will learn how edges influence the level of emotion achieved in portraiture, and how to create unique edges using both heavy body and open acrylics, along with acrylic inks. Effective mark making techniques, color mixing tips, and value control will also be discussed.
Workshop Outline
Week 1 -
The initial block in of a painting using both heavy body and open acrylic. Effective tools and mark making for setting up the composition.
Week 2 -
Working in layers. Continuing to explore effective mark making techniques. Color mixing tips and value control.
Week 3 -
Finishing the painting. How memory plays a role in an emotive portrait. Fine tuning the edges in the painting.

Alizarin Crimson Hue
Transparent Red Iron Oxide
Transparent Burnt Umber
Brushes
synthetic and natural white hog bristles extra-long filberts, flats, liners (size 2), rounds, bristle daggers, and fans ( sizes 4,6,8,10)
Materials and Tools
Painting panel best size is 9x12” – 11x14”
Mastersons sta-wet palette system with sponge and paper 12x16” (for use w/heavy body acrylic)
disposable paper palette (for use w/ open acrylic)
palette knives
silicone wedges and blades
Thick white cotton rags/towel for wiping excess paint on
Paper towels - Blue Shop towels highly recommended
