Course Description

Lessons for the beginner and experienced painters who are looking to break out of the box of traditional linear drawing as it pertains to painting.

In this five session class, “Another Kind of Drawing - Another Kind of Painting” Tom Balderas will show you a how to see outside of the box when it comes to the traditional notions of linear drawing and its place in the construction of paintings.

Tom will offer the idea that building a painting based solely upon the observation of simple shapes and how they are brought together is an excellent way to create organic and exciting works of art.

Tom will give slide lecture examples showcasing his work as well as many of his favorite painters from the past and those who are working today in order to convey his ideas. He will also demonstrate step by step at the easel for you to see his ideas put into action. Based on each session demos and lessons participants will create their own paintings. Specific lesson critiques of participant work will be offered each week. All your questions will be addressed and answered.

Week 1 -

Keynote presentation of painters and paintings that will inspire and speak to the lessons of the day.

Drawing 101.

Defining Linear vs Shape.

The simple drawing.

The concept of ‘note taking.’

Week 2 -

Keynote presentation of painters and paintings that will inspire and speak to the lesson of the day.

The still life as the essential tool for painting.

The simple palette of paint.

The mindset or thinking in color.

What to look for in order to simplify.

Developing a critical eye for observation of light.

Week 3 -

Keynote presentation of painters and paintings that will inspire and speak to the lesson of the day.

The Land or Seascape in simple shapes.

How relating big differences in objects becomes the foundation for the colorist painter.

Mixing paint/color.

Keeping the process of constructing a painting a simplified matter from start to finish.

Week 4 -

Keynote presentation of painters and paintings that will inspire and speak to the lessons of the day.

The Figure as still life and simple shapes coming together.

A word about brush work.

How to develop a gestural or an impressionistic hand.

Week 5 -

Keynote presentation of painters and paintings that will inspire and speak to the lessons of the day.

Putting it all together in the pursuit of dealing with the more complex painting subject.

Charcoal or conte

Sketch pad or sketch book.

PAINTS

Oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, gouache.

Blues:

Ultramarine Blue

Cerulean

Greens:

Pthalo Green or Viridian

Reds:

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Red Light or Medium

Yellows:

Ochre

Cadmium Yellow Light or Medium

Titanium White

Black

Palette

Preferably at least a 16x20 palette / Glass is great with a neutral gray paper underneath, wood. Paper palettes are cost effective and work well but not highly recommended.

Palette Knife

Brushes (I use Hog Hair bristle filbert brushes)

Sizes - I recommend at least three of varying size such as 2, 6 and 12.

ODORLESS TURPENTINE / PAINT THINNER

1 - Decent size jar or can for cleaning brushes

1 - Decent size jar or can for clean turpentine mixing
