Workshop Description

This workshop will cover the basics of creating paintings with oil paint and cold wax medium ((cwm). Additionally, the instructor will demonstrate how collage and a variety of mark-making tools can be used to create complex and engaging surfaces. This workshop is ideal for painters wanting to explore cwm and painters who have tried cwm before and would like a refresher.

Workshop Outline

Week 1 -

Review FAQ re: cwm to cover basics such as substrates, drying times, tools overview, etc. Show brief slide show of cwm work. Demonstrate how to prepare Arches Oil paper and how to apply the first layer. Show how to apply a second layer and press texture into it. Demo a quick alla prima painting using collage, and a few other techniques that work with wet paint. Demo an abstract and abstracted landscape if time allows.

Quick review of week #1 and answer questions. Demonstrate techniques that work well on dry and semi-dry surfaces.

Examples:

  • Apply thin veil of color with brayer

  • Masks

Workshop Materials List

Must Haves

Cold Wax Medium (I use Gamblin)

Arches Oil Paper pad, 9” x 12”, 12 sheets

1” painters tape (blue, white, or green)

Palette knives

Oil Paints (it is helpful to have dark, light, warm, cool and at least one transparent.

Good transparent colors to have are: Transparent Earth Orange, Indian Yellow, Transparent Red Oxide, or Brown Pink. If you plan to buy, student grade is fine and a Gamblin 1980 basic set is very good.)

Nitrile gloves (purchase at drug store)

Palette (glass, disposable palette, freezer paper, etc.)

Messermeister Silicone Bowl Scraper. (Available on Amazon or Cold Wax Academy)

Gamsol (Used for cleaning and solvent reduction techniques. It’s ok to skip this if you try and have a solvent free studio)

Would Be a Luxury to Have

An Inovart Pro Roller 4” Brayer (Available on Amazon or Cold Wax Academy)

(Any brayers can be used,..you could wait and watch the demo to decide if you want to make this investment!)
